HBG Big News This Week: April 1-5, 2019

Following is a recap of major news at Hachette Book Group for the week of April 1-5, 2019:

Bestseller highlight: a thrilling first week for James S.A. Corey’s Tiamat’s Wrath (Orbit) – the novel debuted at #3 on the USA Today bestseller list, and at #3 on the New York Times combined Print & Ebook list, and #6 on the Hardcover Fiction list. This is Corey’s first time on the NYT hardcover list, and Orbit’s highest on the combined P&E list. The USA Today #3 rank is also the highest ever for an Orbit title. Congrats, Orbit and James S.A. Corey! 

More NYT Bestsellers: Nicholas A. Christakis’s Blueprint (LB Spark) debuts at #14 on the Print Hardcover Nonfiction and #11 on the Combined P&E bestsellers list. James Patterson’s newest release, The Cornwalls are Gone (LB) makes its debut at #2 on the Print Hardcover Fiction and at #5 on the Combined P&E bestsellers list. Debuting on the New York Times Audio Monthly bestsellers Nonfiction list is The Case for Trump by Victor Davis Hanson (Hachette Audio/Basic Books) at #9. HBG’s distribution clients have two books on the New York Times list this week.

Parents’ Choice Awards: Hachette Audio’s robust list of 2019 Parents’ Choice Award® winners includes accolades for twelve different productions – from LBYR, JIMMY Patterson, and Running Press – with two books from Malala Yousafzai recognized with their highest honor, the Parents’ Choice Gold Award for We Are Displaced: My Journey and Stories from Refugee Girls Around the World andMalala (LBYR). Indies Choice audio award: Madeline Miller’s Circe (Hachette Audio/LB) is a finalist for the Indies Choice Audiobook of the Year. Libro.fm will be promoting Circe all month across their 650 partner stores and the winner will be announced at Book Expo on May 30.

Indies Choice E.B. White Read-Aloud Award: The ABA announced 2 LBYR titles as finalists for the 2019 Indies Choice/ E.B. White Read-Aloud Award Thank You, Omu! by Oge Mora (Picture Book category) and Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes (Middle Reader category). Booksellers at ABA member stores across the country will choose the winners in nine categories in online balloting between now and April 24, and the winners will be announced in Bookselling This Week on Wednesday, May 1.

James Patterson philanthropy: James Patterson will personally donate $1.25 million to classroom libraries this year, in the fifth installment of his School Library Campaign, announced Tuesday by the Associated Press. In partnership with Scholastic Book Clubs, the program was launched in 2015 as part of an ongoing effort to keep books and reading a priority for children in the United States. To date, Patterson has donated $8.5 million to school libraries.

TV News: Season two of BBC America’s (amazing) Killing Eve series will premiere this Sunday and Luke Jennings’s Codename Villanelle and No Tomorrow (Mulholland) are getting nice mentions in the national media coverage, including New York TimesNew York PostSan Francisco ChroniclePittsburg Post-GazetteMarie Claire, PureWow, Town & Country, and Mercury News.
